Plaster Repairs in Bath

Cracked and blown plaster cut back and made good, patched after leaks and building work, and skimmed flat into the surrounding wall.

The problem

Cracked, Blown and Damaged Walls

  • Cracks reopening in the same place however often they're filled
  • Plaster that sounds hollow when you tap it
  • Damage left behind after a leak, a radiator move or rewiring
  • Rough openings after a wall, chimney breast or old fireplace came out
  • Corners knocked off by furniture, prams and everyday use
  • Walls that have been filled so many times they're no longer flat

Filler is fine for a hairline crack. It isn't the answer for plaster that has come away from the wall behind it — that has to come off and be rebuilt, or you'll be filling the same spot again next year.

The options

Patch the Damage or Skim the Wall

Sometimes a small repair is all that's needed. Sometimes the wall has had enough patching and one skim coat is both cheaper and better.

Patch repairs

A defined area cut back and made good — after a leak, a removed radiator, a rewire or a knock. Quick and proportionate when the rest of the wall is sound.

Skimming the full wall

Where a wall carries several old repairs or has lost its flatness, skimming the whole face gives one consistent surface. It usually costs less than people expect once the patching is priced up.

Making good after building work

Openings, chimney breast removals, new doorways and chased-out electrics beaded, bonded and finished so the new work disappears into the room — part of our plastering services.

How we work

How We Repair Plaster

Repairs done back to a sound background, not filled over and hoped for.

  1. 01

    Find the cause

Movement, a leak, an old repair or plaster that has simply failed. We look at why before deciding how to fix it.

  2. 02

    Cut back to sound

Hollow and loose plaster comes off back to something solid, rather than filling over a problem.

  3. 03

    Rebuild the background

Bonding out, boarding or beading as the repair needs, so the new work sits level with what's around it.

  4. 04

    Skim and clear up

Finish plaster worked flat into the surrounding wall, the room swept and the waste taken away.

Why homeowners use DSB

Small Jobs Treated Properly

Repair work is where a lot of people get let down — the small job that never gets booked in, or gets rushed when it is. We turn up when we said, sheet the room and clear up after ourselves whether it's one patch or a whole house.

You'll also get told when a repair isn't worth doing, or when something else needs sorting first.

Questions

Plaster repair questions

How do I know if the plaster has blown?+

Tap it. Sound plaster feels solid; blown plaster sounds hollow and sometimes moves slightly under your hand. Anything hollow needs taking off rather than filling, or the repair will lift again.

Will a patch match the rest of the wall?+

In most rooms yes, once it's decorated. On an old wall with a lot of texture or under strong side light a patch can occasionally read differently, in which case skimming the whole wall gives the better result.

Do you do small jobs?+

Yes. Plenty of what we do is a wall or two, a patch after a leak or making good after a builder or electrician. Send a photo and we'll tell you honestly whether it's worth a visit.

My plaster is damp. Can you just replaster it?+

Not until the cause is dealt with. Damp from a leak, failed pointing or ground water will come back through new plaster. We'll tell you what we think is causing it and what needs sorting first.

How long before I can decorate?+

New plaster needs to dry properly before paint goes on — how long depends on the thickness, the room and the time of year. We'll give you a realistic figure for your job rather than a stock answer.
