Skimming
Wall and Ceiling Skimming in Bath
A skim coat is what most people mean by "plastering" — a thin, dense finish worked flat over plasterboard or an existing wall so it's smooth and ready to decorate. We work right into corners and up to ceiling lines, and take the time on flattening rather than rushing the trowel.
Cracked, patched or uneven walls are brought back to a sound background first, so the new skim doesn't just hide a problem underneath it.

Stud walls, chimney breasts and ceilings get boarded, taped and skimmed as one job. Where a ceiling already has Artex on it, we can usually overboard straight over the texture and skim it flat, rather than scraping the old coating back — cleaner, quicker, and it avoids disturbing older materials.
Repairs
Plaster Repairs and Making Good
Blown plaster, cracked corners and stains left behind by a leak or a bit of plumbing or electrical work all need the damaged area cut back to sound material before it's made good. On a sound wall a patch blends in well; where the damage is widespread a full skim usually gives a better, more even result.
Renovations
Renovation and Bathroom Plastering
As part of a wider renovation we'll plaster room by room or take on the whole house, working around the other trades on site. Bathrooms are finished ready for tiling, with the background prepared so the tiler isn't fighting an uneven wall.

Bath and the towns around it are full of solid-walled Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian homes. Those walls handle moisture differently from a modern cavity wall, and a dense, impermeable finish isn't always the sensible thing to put on them.
Where a lime-compatible finish is appropriate we use breathable systems such as Breathaplasta, finished smooth so you get a normal decoratable wall. It isn't automatically right for every old house — we look at the background first.

How long does a room take to plaster?+
A typical room skim is usually a day, sometimes two if walls need bonding out first. We'll tell you before we start so you can plan around it.
How long before I can paint?+
Fresh plaster needs to dry right through — often a week or more depending on the weather and heating. The first coat should be a watered-down mist coat.
Can you cover an Artex ceiling instead of removing it?+
Usually yes. In most cases we overboard the ceiling and skim it flat, so the original textured coating is left undisturbed above the new board.
Can you patch a small area rather than skim the whole wall?+
Often yes. Patch repairs blend in well on sound walls. Where a wall is badly damaged or uneven, a full skim usually gives a better result.
