When it's needed

When does a room need replastering?

A room usually needs replastering when the walls or ceilings no longer give a decent surface to decorate. Common reasons include old plaster that has become tired, patchy or uneven; damaged or loose areas; a history of patch repairs that show through the paint; and surfaces that need bringing back to a sound, consistent finish before decorating. Sometimes a skim over the existing surface is enough; sometimes areas need taking back first. Which applies depends on what's there.

Preparation

Preparing existing walls and ceilings

Before plastering, DSB looks at the existing surfaces to decide what they need — a skim, repairs first, or more. The room is protected, with floors sheeted and windows and edges masked. Loose or damaged areas are dealt with and backgrounds are prepared so the new plaster bonds to something sound. It's the part homeowners rarely see, but it decides whether a new finish lasts.

The process

The plastering process

Walls and ceilings are typically skimmed with a finishing plaster, applied in stages and flattened with the trowel as it firms up. Where a surface needs more than a skim, a backing coat can go on first to straighten it out. The photographs below show examples of this work on DSB jobs.

Open walls are only part of the job. Reveals, corners, openings and the wall-to-ceiling line are where a finish looks crisp or looks rushed.

Finished examples

Examples of finished DSB plastering

The goal is a consistent plaster finish across the walls and ceilings. New plaster needs to dry out fully before decorating — it lightens in colour as it does — and a mist coat is normally the first step once it has. These photographs are examples from genuine DSB plastering projects and are not necessarily all from the same property.
